    Brigham Young is one of the most disliked prophets of this dispensation because he was so frank and unapologetic. Yet, that is precisely why I love him and his teachings. The world doesn't need more political correctness - it needs honesty and truth without the window dressing. This is a tremendous compilation of President Young's teachings. Every member of the Church should have this on their shelf (and non-LDS people would benefit from owning this work, too). You won't regret buying it!

    You need to balance books like this that make an extensive effort toward cherry-picking his best statements that sound reasonable to a post-19th Century audience with reading about his teachings on blacks and mixed race couples (said they should be murdered plus their children and that it would be a blessing for them - as one example), on Satan being black, on his support for slavery as ordained by God, on enslaving Native Americans and the mass murder that he ordered against them multiple times, on "blood atonement" and the "Adam-God" doctrine - both of which the LDS church now rejects. Basically he taught a lot of things now rejected by the church. Polygamy remains controversial - look into info that Joseph Smith never actually practiced it, and how it was brought in by Young and Heber C. Kimball primarily. You may be shocked at what you find out. The current church still defends polygamy as beginning with Smith in secret, relying on enemies of Smith and members he excommunicated for much of its evidence and dismissing what others including his own family members (includes his wife Emma) have said. Anyway, lots that Young said and did was all kinds of messed up - but he had a lot of better and more reasonable teachings as well, which is mostly what's in this book, even though some of it sounds sexist and whatnot by today's standards. He is of course an incredibly important figure in American history and westward expansion. I think he should be studied thoroughly (with this book getting you about halfway there).
