Heber J. Grant was an avid businessman, a dedicated servant of the Lord and family man. Far from perfect, Grant strove to not only be the best in all that he did, but also acknowledge his failing and imperfections. The first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to have not personally known the prophet Joseph Smith, Grant grew up with many of the leaders who had and was profoundly influenced by them. Author Matthew J. Haslam tries to capture some of the essence of the character of Heber J. Grant in his book Heber J. Grant: Exemplar to the Saints. His book provides a great deal of insight into the life story of Grant and his growth to become the prophet of the Lord. Haslam’s writing style is faith filled and is complimentary of Grant. To some his writing may seem too praise filled and not critical enough, however the book still offers valuable insights. While many historians are aware of the business acumen and his wealth, little is often noted about his poverty and struggles with debt during the 1890s. Haslam does not provide shocking new insights, however his perspective allows the reader to better grasp the character of Grant. Most of Haslam’s sources stem from Grant’s personal writings and from Improvement Era articles. More academic readers perhaps will wish for more scholarly citations, which is one critique of the book. Overall, this book provides a fascinating perspective in Heber J. Grant’s life and helps to illustrate his growth as an individual. This book, while not the most in depth study, still provides an excellent starting point for those interested in Church History.
